I know for a fact that the road that guys standing on has 55mph speed limit. know this because I’ve seen idiots like this when I used to drive the Avenue of the Giants alot (had to commute past it, so I often drove it)
People who stop in the middle of the road/lane to take pictures.
Not the road in which I was almost hit, but another example of someone standing in the road to take this picture
Yesterday there were two cars stopped in their Lane in a redwood grove for no apparent reason, I would’ve been hit by the guy blacksmoking past them if I was paying less attention. I’m not mad at the guy who passed because he had no way of knowing I was coming and who knows how long he sat behind the tourists before passing. I’ve since decided to buy a cheap dashcam. (Drove a total of mmmaybe 50 miles yesterday and was nearly involved in 3 accidents, one of which couldve been fatal)

The key is to scare them, but give them enough room that you don’t actually kill them.

I’ve tried bitching at them but they act like I’m the asshole, plus that means I’m stopped in the road too. If I floor it past then they feel justified that other drivers are the problem so I usually slow down(in case there’s an actual reason they are stopped) and just give them the wtf face and wtf arm gesture out the window.

Do they not at least try and pull of before going into the middle of the road? I would give them a bit more leeway if it was just a dumbass endangering themselves instead of just blocking the road.

I usually slow down a bit, then go WOT out of there and give them the universal WTF gesture.

It’s possible but unlikely. People have been known to lay down in the road to get a shot from the bottom of the trees(even though they could just walk into the forest.)

The only thing worse than the tourists taking photos are the yokel locals doing ten over in non road worthy cars and tailgating on winding mountain roads lined with huge trees. Had a guy tailgating me at night while driving to our campsite when I was there last month. Hillbilly California at its finest.

It depends, there are alot of tourists in the summer and most use the pullouts properly. Some idiots are halfway in the road with their car(more rare). Other idiots are standing in the road (3-4 people) and look angry that your not doing 25mph. And of course theres the situation that I explained

I understand the 10 over but not the tailgating, I reason if they are the type to pullover they will. Tailgating will just piss them off plus it’s dangerous.

I have walked into the middle of the road to take pictures, but I move if I hear a car coming. What you described is pretty dumb. People certainly need to realize that the road is for cars. It is possible to set everything on the side of the road, run into the middle, listen for cars, snap a picture, and then leave.

If they’re going to look both ways and run out for a quick picture while there are no cars coming from either direction, I say more power to them. But they need to respect the rules of the road and GTFO if their presence is going to affect traffic at all -even if it’s just one car that they’re interrupting. As soon as a car can be seen approaching, they should be hurrying to clear the way so that the road is clear by the time the other car comes through. None of this “can’t you just wait; I’m trying to get a picture” BS.

You know as well as I that there isn’t anywhere to pull over along most of this highway. There are trees right up along the road. Also, there are tons of cyclists on this road. It’s a scenic byway. Doing ten over on it is just plain stupid. Driving aggressively behing a person with Arizona plates is equally stupid.

I like that our touristy areas don’t have areas like this.

I don’t drive that road quickly, specifically due to the cyclists. Maybe I’m remembering wrong but I thought there were quite a few shallow pullouts, though id understand if someone didn’t want to use them. A good 50% of the locals drive these roads at a decent clip(not saying it’s okay) But not everyone tailgates or drive particularly aggressive. Personally I think that road should be limited to 45 or 40 due to all the cyclists and tourists, hell maybe less.
